SOLUTION OF IMPOTENCE PROBLEM: INJECTIONS
In 1997, a 57-year-old teacher took leave from his school and booked into hospital to have his cancerous prostate removed. Afterwards, through diligent exercising, he overcame incontinence but found he was hopelessly impotent.
‘I’ve got a very attractive wile and I just didn’t want to forgo that,’ he says. ‘We’ve been married 23 years and the physical side of marriage is very important to us.’
He didn’t like the idea of an implanted prosthesis, tried vacuum devices without success and eventually, about 4 months after the operation, settled for penile injections.
‘The first few limes, while I was trying to get the dosage right, it ached, but since then I have mostly found the injections excellent,’ he said. ‘Men in their fillies occasionally have difficulty and lose their erections, but with injections I can sustain one for an hour.
‘Initially it was difficult to inject myself there and I would do it painfully slowly and almost have to (urn my head away. But then I discovered an automatic injecting device that does it quickly, and within 5 minutes I have a good erection and there is no difference in the sensation or orgasm.
‘I use it about twice a week, and typically I’ll have a shower, inject myself while in the bathroom and then slip into bed. We start to make love and the erection is there. There are no inhibitions, but of course, your wife has to understand.
‘Over the past 12 months, it has failed three times. I’m not sure if 1 was tired and injected into the wrong spot or whether the medication was too close to its expiry date but nothing happened. We are a very close couple so it didn’t matter.
‘I’ve had one incident of priapism, which lasted 5 hours,’ the teacher explained. ‘I was worried because I’ve read the literature and know what can happen. So I went to the fridge, got some ice, wrapped it in a towel and put it on, and 25 minutes later, much to my relief, it went down.’
While penile injections are a popular treatment for impotence, they do carry risks of priapism (a prolonged erection) and Peyronie’s (a condition that causes a curve in the shaft of the penis), both of which can result in permanent damage.
